Transport Scotland Finds Successful Procurement Model with PACE OLE Materials Prediction Service

Transport Scotland

Scotland’s National Transport Strategy aims to decarbonize passenger rail services by 2035.  As of January 2022, only 25.3% of the Scottish rail network was electrified, and as part of their decarbonization strategy, the plan is to electrify 130 single track kilometres (STK) on average per year to meet the deadline.

To support this rolling programme of electrification and decarbonization, Transport Scotland has utilized PACE Network’s OLE Materials Prediction Service to make a single order and procure product in advance for the coming year.

A major challenge in ordering in advance is understanding the exact quantities that will be required.  PACE’s predictive service takes information on current projects and combines it with an extensive knowledge of similar projects, design guidance and historical supply data, from which it can then provide a projected Bill of Materials for the upcoming year.

Aligned with its electrification and decarbonization efforts, this single bulk order procurement model has provided Transport Scotland with products stocked in the UK, shortening lead times, and reducing its carbon footprint by minimizing small shipments and packaging requirements.

Key advantages of early prediction and bulk ordering include:

  • No price uncertainty
  • Quick turnaround – purchased products already stocked in the UK
  • Reduction of carbon footprint – less shipments and packaging
