PACE Networks Provides Vital Rail Infrastructure to Barking Riverside Station

Barking Riverside Station

As a key supplier for Network Rail, PACE Networks are pleased to have played a significant role in the project which culminated in the successful opening of the Barking Riverside station earlier this month.

PACE supplied just under 300 Omnia cantilevers and other ancillary components to support the extension of the electrified Gospel Oak-Barking line to a new, step-free station in Barking Riverside. This brand-new station will offer more accessible, convenient and sustainable transport options to the residents of this key regeneration area.

The 4.5km extension from Barking station reduces the travel time between the two stops to seven minutes, down from 25 minutes by bus, and provides an easier route to central London.

Gavin Smith, Managing Director of PACE Networks, says: “We are so excited to play a part in this important project. Barking Riverside is central to the massive regeneration scheme in East London, and we are proud to help deliver high-quality and low-carbon transport links to the community that will move into the area.”

PACE had previously supplied Omnia cantilevers and other associated components as part of the electrification of the Gospel Oak-Barking line in 2018. Omnia cantilevers have become the industry standard for new electrification in the UK as they are quick and easy to install and adjust. They reduce the installation time by half and involve fewer people working at height when compared to traditional style cantilevers, delivering significant cost and safety benefits.

“We are really pleased with how the project has turned out. Apart from their superior features, our Omnia cantilevers look smart, contemporary and clean, so they match well with the modern aesthetics of the new viaduct and housing development project in the area,” says Gavin.

He also adds that the station opening earlier than scheduled is a cause for celebration for the local residents. In addition to the great work and collaboration between Transport for London and all its project contractors and supply chain partners, such as Morris Line Engineering, Gavin credits the ahead-of-schedule launch in part to PACE’s early engagement with the contractor.

“This meant we had the stock they needed well in advance before they required the goods for construction, so they didn’t suffer any delays in project completion,” he says. “We were also able to supply, on a short lead-time, many ancillary components that were needed due to unforeseen design changes. We worked hard to supply this emergency stock in weeks rather than the usual months. We are experienced in getting people what they need when they need it, and we are proud that this has contributed to keeping this particular project on track.”

PACE have supplied nearly 20,000 cantilevers as the sole Omnia distributor for the UK and Ireland across projects including the Bromsgrove Electrification Scheme and electrification projects in and around Liverpool-Manchester, Gospel Oaks-Barking, Walsall-Rugeley, Glasgow-Edinburgh, and Stirling-Dunblane-Alloa.

PACE Networks are currently supplying Omnia cantilevers and ancillary equipment to other projects in the UK, including the TransPennine electrification project, as well as further electrification projects in Scotland and on the Midland Main Line. They are also in the process of expanding their product portfolio to include corona detection cameras and surge arrestors, as well as increasing their business in the transmission and distribution industry.
